Two ONG members nominated for journalism awards

A pair of Citizen journalists have been nominated for reporting awards sponsored by the Canadian Association of Journalists.

Glen McGregor and Robert Sibley have been nominated for their work on the Senate expenses scandal and for coverage of last year’s fatal bus/train crash respectively. McGregor’s nomination is in the open media category while Sibley has been nominated in the daily excellence division.

Winners will be announced May 10 at an awards gala in Ottawa.

ONG Secretary Gord Holder visits Saint John 7 strike HQ, offers support

Seven members of the Canadian Media Guild have been on strike against three Saint John New Brunswick radio stations since the summer of 2012. While in Saint John recently ONG executive member Gord Holder dropped by strike headquarters to lend his support. He picked up a strike T-shirt and will be auctioning it off with proceeds headed to the locals strike fund. See more at:

Why are so many journalists willing to write for free?

Last March, an editor from The Atlantic approached freelance journalist Nate Thayer about repurposing an article he’d published elsewhere for the news magazine’s website. Unfortunately, the editor informed him, freelance funds had run out. In lieu of payment, the opportunity would offer Thayer “exposure” to The Atlantic’s 13 million monthly readers.
